‘In the presence of greatness’ – Root praises Stokes

first_img… Star all-rounder the toast of English cricket once again after starring with bat and ball in victory over West Indies at Old TraffordENGLAND skipper Joe Root believes his team is “in the presence of greatness” with star all-rounder Ben Stokes in their side.Stokes was England’s match-winner in their series-levelling victory over the West Indies in Manchester, becoming the first English player to score more than 250 runs and take more than two wickets in a single Test.In 16 Tests since the start of 2019, Stokes averages 55 with the bat and 28 with the ball having last year steered his side to a historic World Cup win as well as a memorable Test victory over Australia at Headingley. After England secured a 113-run win at Old Trafford on Monday, with Stokes starring with both bat and ball on the final day, Root labelled his vice-captain “Mr Incredible”.Everyone understands we are watching a player at the peak of his powers, at the peak of world cricket,” Root said.“Without trying to pump his tyres too much, we are in the presence of greatness.“He’s a genuinely all-round player, something that you don’t see in world cricket. You see guys who have certain strengths, either batting or bowling. But he’s someone you can turn to in any situation.”The Old Trafford Test was dominated by Stokes, who was on the field for all but 51 of the 350 overs in the match, playing contrasting innings with the bat and making vital breakthroughs with the ball. His first-innings 176, the slowest of his 10 Test hundreds, was followed by a quick-fire 78 not out from just 57 balls as an opener in the second innings as England chased quick runs, the fastest ever Test half-century by an England opener. His three wickets in the match all came at crucial junctures, two of them breaking partnerships of 76 and 100 respectively, the highest the Windies enjoyed in the Test.“He’s got so many different skills that he brings to the team,” Root said.Stokes gets inventive as England punish Windies“He’s played a role for us this game with the ball. You can use him in a completely different way as well.“He just seems to get better and better. I think one thing that this game showed more than others is his ability to read different situations. He can do so many roles with the bat. You look at the rest of the game – his impact with the ball. He made something happen when nothing was.“To have such a complete game in so many different gears and modes at your disposal allows you the ability to keep getting better. Most importantly, if he keeps reading the situations as he is, there’s no reason we can’t continue to see such brilliant performances as we have done this week.“There’s drive to get better. The sky is the limit. There’s no reason he can’t keep performing so consistently.”Most importantly for England just days out from the series decider, starting on Friday, Stokes says he’ll be fit to play in the final Test despite pulling up sore partway through his 15th over on the final day.“I’m fine,” Stokes told Sky Sports. “Just the body started to get quite stiff.“I said to Broady (Stuart Broad), ‘the body’s starting to stiffen up, what do you reckon?’ and he said, ‘just stop’. Three or four years ago against Pakistan I had the same thing and I ended up blowing my calf so I didn’t want to take that risk.“Obviously, I’ll give everything to the team, whatever is asked of me.”(Cricket.com.au)last_img read more

Guyana/Brazil celebrate 50 years of bilateral relations

first_img…commemorative stamp launchedA commemorative stamp was on Friday launched at the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s South Road, Georgetown office as Guyana celebrated 50 years of bilateral relations with Brazil. In attendance at the event were subject Minister Carl Greenidge, Telecommunications Minister Catherine Hughes, Deputy Head of Mission of the Brazilian Embassy Paulo Silos, and several others. The stamp will also be launched in Brazil on October 26, although it is currently available in two denominations at the cost of some $200 and $80 locally.Greenidge reminded that Guyana established formal relations with the neighbouring country on August 26, 1986, and the two countries have since closely collaborated in the areas of education, health and technical cooperation, among other areas.Greenidge said, “Over the subsequent 50 years (since establishment of relations), our two countries have solidified relations through close collaboration… These matters are being pursued, (and) continue to be pursued under the variety of mechanisms that were established over the years”.He added that, in recent years, the two countries have intensified their bilateral relations through a series of “high level encounters”.The Deputy Head of Mission of the Brazilian Embassy, Paulo Silos, endorsed Minister Greenidge’s statement and added that the stamp has a powerful message attached, as it is available to all.“A stamp is not just a tiny stamp or a strip of paper. We should not be fooled by small size, as it portrays its true importance and significance. The stamp, in many ways, is better than the visible monument, because a monument is erected in one place, a stamp however has its own powerful impact, as it is not restricted spatially,” he said.Telecommunications Minister Catherine Hughes told the gathering that the stamp is a testimony of the good relations existing between the two countries. “Today’s official launching of the commemorative stamp is one more symbol of the good, strong, neighbourly relations between the Federative Republic of Brazil and the Cooperative Republic of Guyana,” she noted. This stamp happens to be third one produced in recent years to celebrate bilateral relations with Brazil. The first one was launched in 2003 to observe the countries’ 35 years of partnership; the second was produced in 2009 to mark the official commissioning of the Takutu Bridge, which links Guyana and Brazil. Also released on Friday was a 15-minute documentary on the two countries, which captures various aspects of the two nations. In observance of the 50-year-long relationship, a safari will be heading to Brazil next month. This happens to be the first time that the South Rupununi Safari, organised by Rainforest Tours, will be leaving the country.last_img read more

first_imgThe controversy surrounding the Donegal team’s brief appearance on RTE’s Late Late Show has been reignited by one of Ireland’s top broadcasters.Well-known and hugely respected former UTV sports commentator Adrian Logan has branded the interview a disgrace.Logan, affectionately known as Logie, tweeted that RTE should forget about interviewing All-Ireland champions if this was the best they could do. If that’s the best he and RTE can do then forget about it.”Many of Donegal’s army of fans are outraged after their team’s very brief appearance on RTE’s Late Late Show. The team made the 300 mile round-trip on Friday for the show but were only given a little more than four minutes of television time by host Ryan Tubridy. The RTE appearance came after the team had completed a marathon four day bus journey across Donegal visiting most of its towns and village with the Sam Maguire Cup. GARDA COMMISSIONER RESIGNS – DONEGAL TD WELCOMES MOVE

first_imgBREAKING NATIONAL NEWS: Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan has resigned. It follows his use of the word ‘disgusting’ to describe the actions of two Garda whistleblowers. The move is expected to put more pressure on Justice Minister Alan Shatter. Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Pádraig Mac Lochlainn, responding to the resignation of the Garda Commissioner this morning, has said Martin Callinan has made the right decision. He said: “From the moment that the allegations from the two Garda Whistleblowers, Maurice McCabe and John Wilson, emerged about widespread malpractice of the penalty points issue the Garda Commissioner sought to downplay and even dismiss the allegations.“Worse, he repeatedly sought to discredit the credibility of the two whistleblowers which culminated in the outrageous ‘disgusting’ comment at the Public Accounts Committee.“The findings of the Comptroller and Auditor General and more recently the Garda Inspectorate vindicated the core allegations of the whistleblowers and posed serious questions for the management of An Garda Síochána by Commissioner Callinan. “Furthermore the provocative language he used following the allegations that the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission offices had been bugged once again demonstrated poor leadership.“However, what all of these episodes in recent years have clearly demonstrated is a need for an Independent Policing Authority, accountable to an Independent Policing Board, similar to what is in place in the North of Ireland and increased powers given to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission.“My party’s focus will be on these urgent and necessary changes moving forward.” GARDA COMMISSIONER RESIGNS – DONEGAL TD WELCOMES MOVE was last modified: March 25th, 2014 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Martin CallinanResignedlast_img read more
