Bodies of missing North Carolina men found, homicide suspected: Police

first_imgRaleigh Police Department (RALEIGH, N.C.) — Police in North Carolina have found the bodies of two men they believe were killed by two suspects who have been charged with their deaths.James Daishawn Robinson, 21, and Ryan Craig Veach, 19, were charged on Saturday with two counts of murder in the deaths of 23-year-old Brendan Hurley and 21-year-old Anthony McCall, according to the the Raleigh Police Department.A third person, an unidentified juvenile, was charged with accessory after the fact to the murder, according to police.Police have not said how the men were killed or commented on any possible motive.“Through investigative means, detectives were able to locate the body of Brendan Hurley in Johnston County on Saturday,” police told ABC News. “A second body was discovered in Nash County today.”Hurley and McCall were last seen on July 16 and were reported missing the following day.An unidentified man who called police said that Hurley went over to a friend’s house the night before but hadn’t been seen since, according to a recording of the call.“He was supposed to pick me up at 9 p.m. He has not. He’s gone and he didn’t show up for work,” the caller said.He called Hurley a “very responsible young man.”“I need to make a report that he’s missing and something is wrong,” he added.Hurley left behind a 2-year-old daughter.“It’s so sad too because she’s not going to see her dad by a choice that wasn’t given to her,” Laura Hurley, the victim’s mom, told Raleigh ABC affiliate WTVD Monday. “She’s two and now it’s going to be up to us to make sure that she knows who he was and how much he loved her. And it’s so unfair. It’s so unfair what everybody is feeling, friends, families.”McCall’s father, Mark, told the station that Hurley picked up his son around 6:30 p.m. on July 16 to head to McCall’s mother’s house to let her dogs out.It was the last time the two men were seen.Copyright © 2019, ABC Radio. first_imgA Metro train on the Expo line struck two non-USC individuals on bicycles Tuesday night at Jefferson Boulevard and Flower Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department Southwest Division and the USC Department of Public Safety. No information was available at the time of publication about the conditions of the victims.Service on the Expo line was interrupted following the crash between the Jefferson/USC station and the 23rd Street station, according to L.A. Metro, but a bus-shuttle service was set up to transport passengers between the stations during the interruption. The Expo line was reopened just after midnight.Traffic on Jefferson Boulevard between Hope Street and Figueroa Street was also halted following the accident.Teresa Juarez, a South Los Angeles resident, said she and her husband came across one of the victims on scene and called 911.“I didn’t know there was a gentleman on the other side,” Juarez said. “So once we called 911, within a few minutes the paramedics were here and they realized there was another gentleman off on the side and I guess he was worse off, I don’t know, I didn’t see him.”last_img read more

Dodgers’ Will Smith struggling with “learning curve” after hot start

first_img Cody Bellinger homer gives Dodgers their first walkoff win of season “The responsibility is on all of us,” Roberts said. “It’s more of knowing the more repetitions, innings you get with each pitcher the more familiarity, trust and confidence you get. And that works both ways. And that will enhance the rhythm of the game, execution — all that.“Yeah, we’re in a little bit of a funk as far as the starters. But I think if you look at any starting staff in baseball, we all go through it. But it’s not something that we’re not going to overcome.”Not surprisingly, Smith’s offense has come back to earth as well.Through his first 28 big-league games, Smith had a .318 average, 1.210 OPS and 12 home runs in only 102 plate appearances. But he was just 7 for his last 40 (.175) even after a two-hit game Saturday with 16 strikeouts and only one home run in his past 43 plate appearances.Saturday was Smith’s 103rd game of the season — more than he has ever played before with potentially two months still to go. Dodgers’ Max Muncy trying to work his way out of slow start How Dodgers pitcher Ross Stripling topped the baseball podcast empire Dodgers hit seven home runs, sweep Colorado Rockies Fire danger is on Dave Roberts’ mind as Dodgers head to San Francisco center_img Verdugo’s return has been pushed back until after the upcoming road trip at the earliest, leaving just 11 games in the regular season. But Roberts still believes there is time for Verdugo to get healthy and play his way back into the postseason picture.“I do right now. But certainly the calendar is not stopping,” Roberts said. “So now, you sort of do the math. The thing is we’ve just got to get Alex back to health and right now we’re just not there.”ALSORight-hander Ross Stripling will start Wednesday in Baltimore, essentially replacing Hyun-Jin Ryu in the rotation. Walker Buehler is scheduled to start Tuesday with Rich Hill expected to make his return on Thursday.UP NEXTGiants (RHP Dereck Rodriguez 3-8, 5.15 ERA) at Dodgers (LHP Julio Urias 4-3, 2.55 ERA), 1:10 p.m., SportsNet LA (where available), AM 570 LOS ANGELES — It has been a summer blockbuster featuring Will Smith. With dramatic hits filling his highlight reel, Smith has arrived in L.A. with such a flourish that the Dodgers took the rare leap of faith, handing the job of being the primary catcher on a team with World Series aspirations to a rookie. The realities of those responsibilities have settled in. With Smith starting 23 of the past 34 games, the Dodgers’ staff ERA has risen from 3.41 through the end of July to 3.63 since the start of August. The starting rotation has a 5.48 ERA over 15 games through Saturday with Smith behind the plate for 10 of those games.Dodgers manager Dave Roberts acknowledged that “There’s a learning curve” for a rookie catcher like Smith. But he declined to put responsibility on Smith for any slump the pitching staff might be experiencing. “I don’t think it’s fatigue. I don’t think it’s body fatigue,” Roberts said this week. “He’s done a great job of staying in shape, staying strong. I think on the hitting side, there’s a mechanical thing he and the hitting guys have cleaned up.”Hitting coach Robert Van Scoyoc called the mechanical adjustment “nothing significant” and called Smith’s recent slump just “the natural ups and downs” of a season.“The league is adjusting to him and he’s got to adjust back,” Van Scoyoc said. “But, I mean, he’s still been so good overall there’s so many positives. It’s just a little bit of a natural down tick which most guys are going to experience at some point.”MUNCY’S PROGRESSMax Muncy took regular swings in the batting cage Saturday (not off soft toss or flips) for the first time since suffering a fracture in his right wrist 10 days ago. Muncy said it felt “better than I expected.”Roberts said he expects Muncy to return to action Friday when the Dodgers open a series against the New York Mets at Citi Field. Muncy has his eyes on Thursday in Baltimore because the Dodgers will be able to use the DH in the interleague series there. But Muncy said, “I have to remind myself” that he took a 95-mph fastball off his right wrist just 10 days ago.VERDUGO ON HOLDAfter playing just one game as DH for rookie-level Ogden, outfielder Alex Verdugo’s rehab assignment was aborted when recurring back pain flared up again. Verdugo has returned to the Dodgers’ training complex in Arizona where he is taking only “dry swings” (no ball involved) and receiving treatment on his back.“As far as the progression, it’s kind of stagnant right now,” Roberts said.Related Articles Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more

Not All Are Ebola Deaths

first_imgLiberia is considered the worst hit since the outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the Mano River Union basin with over 2000 confirmed, probable and suspected deaths, but not all of these deaths are Ebola related, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has clarified. The Liberian leader stressed recently that the country’s death rate has reflected high numbers because people who died from other illnesses due to the initial impact on the regular healthcare system have been recorded as Ebola victims due to the circumstances of their deaths. She, however, indicated that requisite systems are now in place to remedy the situation by making sure that basic regular health services around the country are restored.President Sirleaf made the assertion when she spoke at the launch of Youth Action International Coalition against Ebola in Monrovia last Thursday. She admitted that the start of the fight against the Ebola virus disease was rocky and difficult, due to the strange nature of the virus, limited capacity, and the lack of initial tools for healthcare workers who are the front liners in the fight.   But she pointed out that the fight is now well on course.President Sirleaf said  attitude and behavioral change are cardinal to breaking the transmission chain and ending the further spread of the deadly disease in Liberia. She reminded the young people that attitude, behavior, as well as cultural and traditional values remain major challenges to efforts aimed at eradicating the virus from Liberia. She called on members of the coalition against Ebola to go all out and reach to communities and neighborhoods across the country with simplified messages of sensitization and awareness that will help change people’s behavior towards the deadly virus.“We can do all to bring in international help as the case is now. We can build Ebola Treatment Units across the country, establish testing centers, bring in all the medication and personal protective equipment, but if the behavior of Liberians is not changed, the virus will continue to spread,” she warned.“We must follow the preventive instructions from health authorities to save ourselves and our country,” the Liberian leader emphasized. She pointed out that government is giving and will continue to give the deserved attention to ensure that the virus is eradicated from Liberia. She lauded the efforts of heroes such as Montserrado District No. 13 Representative Saah Joseph, Dr. Jerry Brown and his team of the ELWA-2 Ebola Treatment Center, as well as all healthcare workers involved in the fight for their sacrificial services to the nation. The Liberian leader thanked the Youth Action International Executive Director, Dr. Kimmie Weeks, and the young people for the initiative and promised that with all hands on deck, Ebola will soon be history in Liberia. She rejected projections from international organizations that over one million persons across West Africa will die by January, adding that steps are being taken to reverse these pessimistic projections.Speaking earlier, Montserrado County Representatives Acarous Gray and Saah Joseph, Christian Health Association of Liberia (CHAL) head, Patricia Kamara, representatives of the UN Children’s Agency (UNICEF) and the U. S. Embassy in Monrovia thanked the coalition of young people for the initiative. They joined President Sirleaf in expressing the hope that the virus will soon be history in Liberia. They committed themselves  to standing with the government and the young people to eradicate the virus from Liberia. For his part, Youth Action International Executive Director, Dr. Kimmie Weeks,  pointed out that the undertaking was not a Youth Action International Initiative, but that of  different youth organizations that have been assembled under the guidance of his organization. He indicated that he made a personal commitment not to leave Liberia until the Ebola virus disease is contained and eradicated from our shores.Dr. Weeks pointed out that all member organizations of the coalition, numbering over 75 with over 6,000 youths, are already working on Ebola-related programs in various communities around the country. The goal, he indicated, is for all people to know how to protect themselves from the Ebola virus disease and thereby break the chain of transmission.“Young people are most times efficient, but often get limited with no support. The international community and the government must ensure the empowerment of youth-based organizations that are committed to playing critical roles in the fight against the further spread and eradication of the virus,” Dr. Weeks urged. He admitted that the Ebola battle is a fight for life and survival and that all must be done to the end the devastation of the country by this disease.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Barge handed over to Kwakwani NDC

first_img– 30.5% of proceeds for community developmentThe Kwakwani community in Region 10 (Upper Demerara- Berbice) is expected to reap the economic benefits associated with the recent handing over of a barge by the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL).Regional Vice Chairman Alroy Adolph said 30.5 per cent of the proceeds would go to the community, which would greatly help in its development. He noted that previously the community did not benefit from any of the revenue generated by the barge, which for years was operated by a private owner. Passengers using the vessel would usually pay $200 for a return trip, while motor vehicles crossed at a cost of $2000. Larger trucks had a crossing charge of $16,000.Adolph said in an effort to facilitate the handover, an official document was sent to the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) Chairperson through Winston Rosario of NICIL. He noted that the vessel was working under a two-month contract undertaken with private company Edwards to see how it would work out.The barge, located at the crushing plant, was officially expected to recommence activities on Monday. According to Adolph, a number of logging trucks and Canters which were stalled pending the way forward were expected to cross the waterway.“It’s a plus to the community because when you look at 30.5 per cent based upon how many vehicles cross, looking at two trucks per day, that would give you approximately $240,000 for the month and it’s a plus to the community because about two or three persons would be employed,” he said.Apart from the barge, he noted that the NDC would benefit from the collection of rates and taxes.last_img read more

Many grads face years of loan payments

first_imgMore than $17 billion in private student loans were issued last year, up from $4 billion a year in 2001. Outstanding student borrowing jumped from $38 billion in 1995 to $85 billion last year, according to experts and lawmakers. Rocketing tuition fees made borrowing that much more appealing. Consumer prices on average rose less than 29 percent over the past 10 years while tuition, fees, and room and board at four-year public colleges and universities soared 79 percent to $12,796 a year and 65 percent to $30,367 a year at private institutions, according to the College Board. Scholarship and grant money have increased, yet for almost 15 years, the maximum available per person in government-guaranteed student loans, which by law can’t charge rates above 6.8 percent, has remained at $23,000 total for four years. That’s less than half the average four-year tuition, room and board of $51,000 at public colleges and $121,000 at private institutions. Sallie Mae, formally known as SLM Corp., has been on the winning side of the loan bonanza. Its portfolio of 10 million customers includes $25 billion in private and $128 billion in government-backed education loans. However, private-equity investors who had offered $25 billion to buy the company backed out last week, citing credit market weakness and a new law cutting billions of dollars in subsidies to student lenders. Citigroup Inc., Bank of America Corp., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Wells Fargo & Co., Wachovia Corp. and Regions Financial Corp. are also big players in the private student loan business. The question is whether everyone who borrowed will be able to repay. Experts don’t track default rates on private student loans, but many predict sharp increases in years to come. Dr. Paul-Henry Zottola, a 35-year-old periodontist in Rocky Hill, Conn., faces paying $1,600 a month on his student loan on top of a $2,300 mortgage payment and $1,500 on the loan he took out to start his practice. His credit record remains solid but he owes more than $300,000 in student loans as he and his wife, Heather, an elementary school administrator, raise two young children. “It would be very easy to feel crushed by it,” Zottola said in an interview. “All my income for the next 10 years is spoken for.”160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. I can’t travel; I can’t do anything,” she said. “I feel like a prisoner.” A legal aid worker, Cole said she may need to get a job at a law firm “doing something that I’m not real dedicated to, just for the sake of being able to live.” Parents are still the primary source of funds for many students, but the dynamics were radically altered in recent years as tuition costs soared and sources of readily available and more costly private financing made higher education seemingly available to anyone willing to sign a loan application. Students with no credit history and no relatives to co-sign loans (or co-signing parents with tarnished credit) were willing to bet that high-priced loans were a trade-off for a shot at the American dream. But high-paying jobs are proving elusive for many graduates. “This is literally a new form of indenture … something that every American parent should be scared of,” said Barmak Nassirian, associate executive director of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. The near doubling in the cost of a college degree the past decade has produced an explosion in high-priced student loans that could haunt the U.S. economy for years. While scholarship, grant money and government-backed student loans – whose interest rates are capped – have taken up some of the slack, many families and individual students have turned to private loans, which carry fees and interest rates that are often variable and up to 20 percent. Many in the next generation of workers will be so debt-burdened they will have to delay home purchases, limit vacations, even eat out less to pay loans off on time. Kristin Cole, 30, who graduated from Michigan State University’s law school and lives in Grand Rapids, Mich., owes $150,000 in private and government-backed student loans. Her monthly payment of $660, which consumes a quarter of her take-home pay, is scheduled to jump to $800 in a year or so, confronting her with stark financial choices. last_img read more

NEW ARDARA BAKERY OWNER TELLS OF HIS DREAM TO MAKE A CRUST AGAIN

first_imgTHE new owner of the recently-doomed Gallgher’s Bakery in Ardara has said he plans to make the company a huge success again.Declan Gallagher, who father Frank founded the bread-maker in 1968, bought back the company from IAWS yesterday after selling it in 2007.Mr Gallagher’s rescue package comes just weeks after IAWS said it was pulling out of Ardara with the loss of 189 jobs. Last night Mr.Gallagher told donegaldaily.com that he hopes to have 70 jobs up and running in the fresh bread production end of the business shortly with another 30 to follow. He also revealed the company has plans to diversify into new product ranges.“It has been a tough four days but we are delighted that the business is now back under our full control.“We have a great product and we have a terrific workforce and now we must make it work. “People still eat bread during a recession but we must ensure that we move with the times and introduce some new products,” he said.At present only half of the 50,000 sq foot factory in Ardara is being used. But the expansion of the company into different ranges could see the rest of the plant utilised.Mr Gallagher, who refused to divulge how much he paid for the company, asked Donegal retailers to get behind the company and companies like it and to spend money locally in shops, garages, restaurants and other stores.“We have got to think about our future and protect as many manufacturing companies as we can in our region for our children’s sake,” he said. And he added “I would like to express my appreciation to IAWS for following through on their stated determination to see the Fresh bread business preserved. They have been part of very positive negotiations on the sale and likewise Údarás na Gaeltachta have been very supportive of the effort being made.”Stephen McCahill, chairman of the Ardara Traders Association, said nobody could have pulled off what Declan Gallagher has done.“It is a credit to him because Gallaghers is simply in his blood. Nobody else but Declan could have done it.“He now deserves all our support and he will get it,” he said. Confirmed MH370 wreckage shows it did not have a controlled landing.

first_imgThe condition of new wreckage, which authorities believe is almost certain to have come from Malaysian Airlines Flight MH 370, shows the plane would have hit the water at high speed and disintegrated on impact. The find by a South African family in Mozambique – possibly the most significant discovery of wreckage from MH370 so far – would dispel the theories that the pilot tried to make a controlled landing.A serial number on the wreckage – dubbed the fourth piece – matches an upper main wing panel and shows it is almost certainly from MH370 say experts.A South African family that recently were on holiday in Mozambique came across the piece in December but only realised the significance after another suspected piece of debris – the second – was found on a sandbank off Mozambique two weeks ago.The new fourth piece bears a striking resemblance to the second found by American MH370 hunter Blaine Gibson. The family are now in contact with South African and Australian authorities.South Africa’s Civil Aviation Authority’s Accident and Incident Investigations Division has confirmed to East Coast Radio Newswatch they are sending an official to pick up the debris, before passing it on to international investigators looking into the disappearance of the plane.AirlineRatings understands its will be flown to Australia for identification. The second piece found by Mr Gibson arrived in Malaysia yesterday and is being sent onto Australia over the weekend for examination.Another piece – the third – which carries the grey and blue Malaysia Airlines colours was discovered on Reunion Island last week.In a twist, that piece which was now been handed over to police, was found by the Johnny Begue, who discovered the first piece of debris – a “flaperon” off MH370 in July last year.Mr Begue told AFP that he was out jogging on the shore when he found the object measuring about 40 by 20 centimetres which had a blue mark on the surface and was grey underneath. This piece is being flown to France for examination.Last week UWA oceanographer Charitha Pattiaratchi said drift modelling showed that debris would wash up first at Reunion Island then the East Coast of AfricaProfessor Pattiaratchi said that “debris would start appearing in the Mozambique Channel from September last year.”The latests finds, if confirmed from MH370,  confirm with out any doubt that the international search team are looking in the right area, 1800km west-south-west of Perth, for MH370 according to Professor Pattiaratchi.last_img read more

Hands On with ThemeIt, New App Store for iPhone Jailbreakers
