Message to Big Ben—Be a leader, a mentor, not a crybaby (Feb. 20)

first_imgBEN ROETHLISBERGERSince shortly before the final 2018 NFL regular season game was played at Heinz Field between AFC North divisional rivals the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals, “the soapbox has been turnin’ and reputations have been burnin’”…All while Steelers starting quarterback Ben “Big Ben” Roethlisberger has been using the “fake news” radio and TV outlets to shift the blame for his shortcomings in a way that appears as if as he’s been mentored by the 45th President of the United States.Roethlisberger is essentially on record saying that he has earned the right to be critical of his teammates. On Nov. 28, 2018, after the Steelers lost a critical game in Denver to the Broncos, USA Today sportswriter Lorenzo Reyes posted the following quotes from Roethlisberger after he called in for a radio interview trying to blame everyone except Jed Clampett for tossing the game-ending pick. “I think I have earned the right to be able to do that [criticize his teammates] with as long as I have been here,” Roethlisberger said. “I’ll just be just as critical on myself as well in front of you guys. You have to know how to motivate different guys in different ways. I think that’s part of being a leader, being a captain, just understanding players. So sometimes you just grab them off to the side, and sometimes you have to be honest with them.”Hey “Big” Ben, how about being honest with yourself when you throw game-ending picks? Is Ben Roethlisberger the quarterback, the head coach and the offensive coordinator all wrapped into one? It has been also rumored that in a team meeting he allegedly said this to Antonio Brown: “I don’t have to throw you the ball.”Does that statement by Roethlisberger reveal that he thinks that he is superior to his offensive coordinator and head coach? Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown seems to think so. Brown recently tweeted the following. “He has an owner mentality like he can call out anybody including coaches. Players know but they can’t say anything about it otherwise they meal ticket gone. It’s a dirty game within a game.” Roethlisberger has that entitled, “I can’t do anything wrong attitude.”Roethlisberger also criticized rookie wideout James Washington for failing to reel in an overthrown errant pass thrown near him by “Big Ben” late in the third quarter. “He has to make (the catch),” Roethlisberger said. “I just think he didn’t trust his hands.”Has Roethlisberger become a mind reader?“Yes, he’s a rookie, but you can’t be out there if you’re not going to make those plays for us.”“Big” Ben must have forgotten that all of his veteran teammates were not totally thrilled with him during his rookie year. Lest we forget; on Sept. 21, 2004, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette sports columnist Ed Bouchette penned an article shortly after the Steelers then-rookie QB Roethlisberger took over for the Steelers’ injured starter Tommy Maddox. Former Steelers O-lineman Alan Faneca was asked was it exciting that the young quarterback was at the helm. “Exciting?” Faneca replied to a question in an are-you-crazy kind of way. “No, it’s not exciting. Do you want to go work with some little young kid who’s just out of college?” It’s a learning process for him. He’s a No. 1 pick, he’s fresh out of college and that’s the big thing. He’s throwing in a new offense. He’s not in that Miami, Ohio, offense that he sat in for three years, four years. He has to learn that, too, so there’s a lot to soak in.”Hey Ben, there is a lot of knowledge that younger players have to soak in. It’s also a process for James Washington. Remember that you were rookie a couple of decades ago and they trusted in your “raw” abilities. Now is not the time for tears and sniffles. Be a leader, a mentor and not a crybaby. League Two news: Richard Money axed as manager of struggling Cambridge United

first_img1 Richard Money Cambridge United have sacked manager Richard Money after three years at the helm.Money guided the U’s to promotion back into the Football League in 2014 and to FA Trophy glory in the same season.Last term, he presided over a memorable FA Cup run, which saw Cambridge take Manchester United to a replay, and led the club to League Two survival. He was duly rewarded with a three-year deal in May which also gave him greater off-field control. But Money has now been shown the door just five months later after a difficult start to the new campaign.Cambridge have won just five of their 16 games and are 18th in the League Two table following Friday night’s defeat at home to Bristol Rovers.Assistant manager Joe Dunne will take charge of training this week ahead of the club’s FA Cup tie against Basingstoke at the Abbey Stadium on Saturday.“The club has taken this difficult decision due to the disappointing pattern of results over the last nine months and because the current squad is not showing consistent signs of achieving its potential,” read a U’s statement.“We want to place on record our sincere thanks to Richard, who has been instrumental in the club’s progress over the last three years. “He led the team to success in the FA Trophy, promotion back to the Football League and a memorable run in the FA Cup last season which culminated in two games against Manchester United. Richard has achieved a special place in the history of Cambridge United Football Club and will always be warmly welcomed at the Abbey Stadium.”last_img read more

Confirmed MH370 wreckage shows it did not have a controlled landing.

first_imgThe condition of new wreckage, which authorities believe is almost certain to have come from Malaysian Airlines Flight MH 370, shows the plane would have hit the water at high speed and disintegrated on impact. The find by a South African family in Mozambique – possibly the most significant discovery of wreckage from MH370 so far – would dispel the theories that the pilot tried to make a controlled landing.A serial number on the wreckage – dubbed the fourth piece – matches an upper main wing panel and shows it is almost certainly from MH370 say experts.A South African family that recently were on holiday in Mozambique came across the piece in December but only realised the significance after another suspected piece of debris – the second – was found on a sandbank off Mozambique two weeks ago.The new fourth piece bears a striking resemblance to the second found by American MH370 hunter Blaine Gibson. The family are now in contact with South African and Australian authorities.South Africa’s Civil Aviation Authority’s Accident and Incident Investigations Division has confirmed to East Coast Radio Newswatch they are sending an official to pick up the debris, before passing it on to international investigators looking into the disappearance of the plane.AirlineRatings understands its will be flown to Australia for identification. The second piece found by Mr Gibson arrived in Malaysia yesterday and is being sent onto Australia over the weekend for examination.Another piece – the third – which carries the grey and blue Malaysia Airlines colours was discovered on Reunion Island last week.In a twist, that piece which was now been handed over to police, was found by the Johnny Begue, who discovered the first piece of debris – a “flaperon” off MH370 in July last year.Mr Begue told AFP that he was out jogging on the shore when he found the object measuring about 40 by 20 centimetres which had a blue mark on the surface and was grey underneath. This piece is being flown to France for examination.Last week UWA oceanographer Charitha Pattiaratchi said drift modelling showed that debris would wash up first at Reunion Island then the East Coast of AfricaProfessor Pattiaratchi said that “debris would start appearing in the Mozambique Channel from September last year.”The latests finds, if confirmed from MH370,  confirm with out any doubt that the international search team are looking in the right area, 1800km west-south-west of Perth, for MH370 according to Professor Pattiaratchi.last_img read more

Disaster Aid Remains Tied Up

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Jerry HagstromDTN Political CorrespondentWASHINGTON (DTN) — Following the defeat of two bills to address 2018 and 2019 disasters on the Senate floor Monday evening, Democrats offered a new plan to address Puerto Rico while Republicans criticized their colleagues for blocking urgently needed aid to other parts of the country.Senate Appropriations Committee Vice Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on Tuesday introduced a substitute to the emergency disaster supplemental while the House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee addressed the issue at a hearing on the rural economy.Democrats want more aid for Puerto Rico than the Republicans have proposed. On Monday evening, neither a Republican proposal that contained $600 million in additional food stamp benefits for Puerto nor the House-passed bill that is more generous to Puerto Rico got the 60 votes needed to proceed.Meanwhile, Senate Republicans blamed Democrats for stopping both the aid to Puerto Rico that was in the Republican bill and aid to farmers.Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said, “Senate Democrats yesterday blocked a bill that provides much-needed funds for Puerto Rico’s nutrition program, also aid for the 2018 hurricane and wildfires, and thirdly assistance to Midwest states in the midst of a flood crisis.”“That includes at least Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, maybe other states,” Grassley said.“Now, the people that voted against it say it was because they care about Puerto Rico. But the bill they blocked takes care of the urgent funding shortfalls there in that commonwealth,” he said.“Playing politics with disaster aid does a disservice to the people of Puerto Rico and the people of states like Iowa that are suffering right now from these floods,” Grassley said. “Why would these senators want to come to campaign in Iowa when they don’t show sympathy for Iowans suffering from the floods with the vote that they cast last night?”At a House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee hearing on the rural economy Tuesday, Paxton Poitevint, the president and CEO of Southwest Georgia Farm Credit in Bainbridge, Georgia, said that while crop insurance, commodity programs and trade agreements are helping, the cotton and nut farmers whose crops were devastated by Hurricane Michael and timber growers in his area “need federal disaster assistance now.”House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Sanford Bishop, D-Ga., said at the hearing, “To be honest, I did not think we’d still be sitting here in April without a disaster aid package signed into law.”Bishop added that he is “extremely frustrated” and “hopeful it will happen soon.”Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, R-Neb., whose district has been devastated by floods, said that as bad as the agricultural losses are now, they “are going to mount.”Iowa officials estimate about $214 million in agricultural losses and more than $1.6 billion in total disaster losses. Nebraska officials estimate agricultural losses could top $1 billion because of as much as $500 million in livestock losses and $400 million in crop losses, as well as prevented planting challenges this spring. Nebraska officials estimate another $450 million just in road damages. Missouri officials have not released any estimates, but parts of northwest Missouri and southwest Iowa remain underwater. The Leahy/Schumer amendment totals $16.7 billion and includes $2.5 billion in new funding for disaster-stricken communities in the Southeast and Midwest and restores certain funding for Puerto Rico and other territories.Leahy and Schumer said, “We cannot pick and choose which American citizens to help in times of crisis. Democrats are ready to stand with all American communities affected by recent natural disasters. We hope Republican leadership will stand with us in this effort.”The amendment includes increased funding for Community Development Block Grants and grants to help rebuild damaged water systems in Puerto Rico. It also provides Medicaid funding for other territories and mandates that the Department of Housing and Urban Development speed up the release of billions in Community Development Block Grant funding the Trump administration has been withholding from disaster stricken communities.Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., whose constituents suffered from wildfires and forest fires in 2018, voted against the Republican bill and said, “In California, the scale of last year’s destruction was unprecedented. Wildfires killed 85 people, destroyed nearly 14,000 homes and burned more than 150,000 acres, including the entire town of Paradise. Recovery efforts are already underway and additional funding is needed to prevent any delay.”“Tragically, Californians aren’t the only Americans still trying to recover,” Feinstein said. “Victims of recent typhoons, volcanoes, earthquakes, floods, tornadoes and hurricanes, including those that struck Puerto Rico two years ago, are also counting on Congress to approve this funding.“Congress used to set politics aside after major disasters and help victims in their time of need. Partisan infighting won’t rebuild a single home or school. It’s time we pass an emergency supplemental bill that includes funding for all disaster victims.”President Donald Trump has said he does not want to provide any aid to Puerto Rico beyond the money for food stamps. Trump called the leaders of Puerto “incompetent and corrupt” and made statements that are factually incorrect, The New York Times reported.Jerry Hagstrom can be reached at [email protected] him on Twitter @hagstromreport(CC/AG)© Copyright 2019 DTN/The Progressive Farmer. Why Your Company Should Have a Facebook Page (Not a Profile)

first_imgTags:#biz#How To Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Related Posts john paul titlowcenter_img The need to leverage social media for business is a no-brainer at this point, but a company’s effectiveness on Facebook can be hampered if the account isn’t set up properly. Here are four reasons why your business should be set up as a Page, rather than a standard profile. Facebook Says SoAccording to Facebook’s terms of service, “Profiles represent individuals and must be held under an individual name, while Pages allow an organization, business, celebrity, or band to maintain a professional presence on Facebook.” If your business’ profile gets shut down by Facebook for violating this rule, your friends list will vanish with it. Pages Offer Analytics and Like WidgetsTwo really crucial advantages of administering a Page are user analytics and easily-embeddable Like buttons and widgets. With the recently overhauled Facebook Insights, you can view all kinds of useful data about user activity on your page, including how many likes and comments you received each day, demographic break-downs and much more. This data can be really useful for understanding the characteristics of your customer base, and knowing which wall posts get the best reaction. This data is not available to individual profiles.Another thing profiles don’t offer is the means to embed a Like button and other Open Graph plugins into your own site. This is a major setback for businesses hoping to grow their audience on Facebook. Pages Can Have Unlimited Fans.On Facebook, individual profiles are limited to 5,000 friends, whereas Pages can have unlimited fans (or likes). Once your profile friend list reaches 5,000, Facebook will encourage you to set up a Page, but doesn’t offer a tool to convert your profile to a Page. For that, you’re on your own.Converting a Profile to a Page is a NightmareIf you already set up your business on Facebook with a profile, converting “friends” to “fans” is no simple process. The only way to switch them over is to politely ask the friends to do it themselves. This can be accomplished either via status update or by sending them all a message explaining the change and linking them to your new Page. A third option would be to use Facebook’s formal Page recommendation tool to suggest that friends Like your new page. However, this option doesn’t give you the opportunity to type a custom message explaining why you’re asking them to do it.When converting friends to fans, it’s important to clearly articulate to users why you’re asking them to like your business, because in their mind they’re already connected to it via Facebook and shouldn’t need to take any further action. You’ll need to include a concise and friendly note to your users explaining that you’re switching from a profile to a Page to better serve them and ask them to click the like button to stay connected. Whichever approach you take, there’s no guarantee that each and every one of your friends will end up clicking on your Page’s like button, and repeatedly following up to remind them to do so can annoy users. At some point, you’ll have to decide if you’re going to delete the original profile, keep it semi-hidden via privacy settings or just let it sit there. Maintaining two different presences on Facebook can be confusing for your users, and thanks to Facebook’s friend recommendation feature, your long-abandoned profile will continue to pop up when friends of friends log in, and the requests will keep rolling in. The Apps Are Here: World Bank Apps for Development Challenge Now Open For Voting

first_imgWhy Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… marshall kirkpatrick Tags:#web Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting The World Bank works with a network of specialists all over the world to gather and curate a large body of economic development data each year. The organization has made a few million dollars from subscription sales of its datasets to universities and other institutional subscribers – but last year the Bank decided it would rather give the data away for free and see what would happen. In order to make the most of this new opportunity, the Bank decided to work with Challenge Post, a software developer contest adminstration service, to create a contest called Apps for Development, challenging developers around the world to build apps on top of the data. The apps are in, it’s time to vote and the things people have built are quite remarkable. The apps have come from 30 different countries and more were built in Africa than in Europe.Debate about the Bank and its dataSee the blog Flowing Data’s coverage and discussion of the Bank’s opening of its data in April 2010.Data guru Jon Udell was critical of the way the data was released, saying it “could be webbier.”Data hacker and ReadWriteWeb contributor Pete Warden was very excited about the data’s availability in CSV format and said “I hope more providers consider data dumps in addition to APIs, they open up so many more uses.”ReadWriteWeb’s Klint Finley covered the launch of the contest, noting that the World Bank has faced extensive criticism on multiple levels, all over the world. “But this could be a good opportunity for developers with ideas to do some good while making some money,” he wrote.107 applications have been submitted, ranging from tools for visualizing the World Bank data to a social bookmarking tool for categorizing web pages as related to various Millenium Development Goals, to an app that delivers prenatal and maternal health information to the mobile phones of mothers and many more. In order to be submitted, an app had to make some use of World Bank data and it had to adress one of the United Nations’ Millenium Development Goals.“Developers have been using the data in ways we never dreamed of,” says the World Bank’s Neil Fantom. “The subscription model had some advantages but that advantage is far outweighed by what we’re seeing with the data we’re now publishing. “It’s been important to provide incentives for people to use the data [and as a result] we’re reaching a completely different audience here with this challenge.”Can making data available change peoples’ minds, policies and lives? “We’re just at the edge of that,” Fantom says. He cites early examples like a mobile reporting system in Bolivia that rural households have used to verify whether solar panels included in an electrification project have in fact been delivered. That kind of mobile data collection, mashed up with other data, can help form an accountability loop to maximize the effectiveness of development projects. A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Related Posts Fantom says the World Bank is currently recruiting an open data evangelist and aims to transform a meaningful amount of its work under this model. The ways that developers use and ask for data will influence the ways the organization gathers and offers data, he says. Many parts of the world still don’t have basic data sets that other people take for granted – like vital records of deaths and their causes. “Imagine trying to do something with insurance without that kind of basic data, for example,” Fantom says. The prospect of a global institution using its resources to create new data assets that can be made freely available to a world-wide corps of innovative developers and then turned into software that’s deployed to a global populace, heavily connected by mobile device – that’s a very different vision of development than dominated the last century. The possibilities are many and hopefully this will just be the beginning“We are trying to open up the model so we have collaboration with a whole range of different innovators,” says Fantom. “We don’t know what people will do with our data but on the whole we believe they are going to add value to it. No, we’re sure they’ll add value to it.”Voting on which apps should be awarded prizes is open to the public through the month of February. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

How Long Should You Wait For Deals On Apple Products? [Infographic]

first_imgadam popescu 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Tags:#Apple#Mac#sales Related Posts Quick, the new Apple MacBook is out. What do you do? Mortgage next month’s paycheck and pre-order it online? Or maybe wait a few months and get a refurbished version? Maybe you type in a school promotional code on the Apple site, and get a measly little discount? Or should you just buy an older model — or just sit on your hands and wait until the price drops? What to do, what to do?Well, you could try something like this: Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… So if you can be patient, you stand a much better chance of finding some real deals out there for Apple swag.Brooklyn-based Dealnews, a deal-hunting site founded in 1997, put together the above graphic to help consumers do just that. The site, which makes its money from advertising and affiliate partnerships, employs about 60 “dealhunters” who scour the web for good buys. For the above graphic, Dealnews looked at a year’s worth of data and calculated how long it takes a new Apple product to generate an actual deal for consumers. For example, the MacBook Pro 15.4″ with retina display was released in June 2012 with a starting price of $2,199. The site listed a deal two days after its release for $118 off the initial price. Nine months later, the best deal was $350 off.In other words, he who hesitates… may walk off with a bargain. (Works for “she who hesitates,” too, of course.)Dealnews offers another tip from its research. If you want the best price for Apple products, don’t buy them from Apple! Instead, wait until a new model comes out, then haunt the MacMalls and Best Buys of the world and buy the previous version days or weeks after the new release.
