No. 44 Men’s Tennis Heads To The Lone Star State

first_imgHOUSTON, Texas – The 44th-ranked Drake men’s tennis team heads to Houston for the Rice Invitational on Saturday through Sunday as the Bulldogs will square off against No. 9 Texas Tech, No. 40 Rice and No. 70 William & Mary. The Bulldogs begin the two-day event against host Rice on Saturday at noon and then finish the first day against Texas Tech at 5 p.m. Drake wraps up its weekend on Sunday against William & Mary at noon. Drake is coming off a big win over No. 26 Oregon, as the Bulldogs topped the Ducks, 4-3 on Tuesday. Drake is now 8-6 against nationally ranked teams. Sophomore Calum MacGeoch leads the team with 13 dual match singles wins, while freshman Vinny Gillespie has 12 and is on a five-match winning streak. The Rice Owls are coming off a 4-0 loss to No. 7 Texas A&M and have a 14-5 record. The Owls are led by David Warren, who has 11 dual match wins. Texas Tech recently won the San Diego Invitational and topped No. 28 Tulane to claim the title. The Red Raiders are on a four-match winning streak. Tech has three players ranked nationally in singles and a pair of doubles teams ranked as well. Felipe Soares is ranked No. 14 with a 8-3 record, while Alex Sendegeya and Hugo Dojas are ranked 108 and 116, respectively. Soares and Dojas leads the team in doubles and are ranked sixth, while Sendegeya and Bjorn Thomson are tabbed 53rd. William & Mary enters the weekend with a 11-3 record and is riding a four-match winning streak.  The Tribe has three players with 10 or more dual match singles wins with Aidan Talcott leading the way with a perfect 12-0 record, while Lars de Boer and Damon Niquet each have 10 wins. Following the Bulldogs’ trip to the Lone Star State, Drake begins Missouri Valley Conference action on Saturday, April 9 by hosting rivals Wichita State. Print Friendly Versionlast_img read more
