first_imgJamaica and West Indies batsman Nkrumah Bonner will be aiming to make an impact in the four-day West Indies Professional League this season with his new team, the Leeward Islands Hurricanes. Bonner, who was not re-signed as one of Jamaica’s 15 contracted players, was drafted by the Leewards during this season’s annual player draft. “I want to make an impact with the Leewards, and hopefully take my career to another level,” said Bonner, one of two mandatory overseas players picked by the Leewards. “For the past two years, I have not been performing well in four-dayers, and this I want to change. “I am now in good shape both physically and mentally, and plan to go there and do my best, which I hope will be enough to see the team challenge for the title.” The 26-year-old, who represented West Indies in two Twenty20 Internationals four years ago, but has failed to kick on, has had a checkered regional career. In 40 first-class matches, he averages 21.19, and has made one century and seven fifties. He, however, boasts a slightly better one-day record, averaging 34.17 in 34 appearances, and has scored three hundreds and five half-centuries. “I have been performing fairly well in one-day cricket. It is just for me to transfer that energy and aggression to the four-dayers,” he said. “Once I do that and demonstrate more concentration and discipline, I know I will do well.” Meanwhile, Bonner, who was initially drafted by Trinidad and Tobago Red Force and was later swapped with the Leewards’ final pick, Narsingh Deonarine, said he holds no ill feelings to the Jamaica selectors. “I was not surprised at being dropped by Jamaica,” he said. “It was a job, and like any 9-5, if you do not perform your services can be terminated. “I am, however, lucky enough to be contracted by another team. I can focus on my game, and don’t have to fight as a pay-for-play player .” Bonner will be based in St Kitts and Nevis.last_img read more

first_imgRafael da Silva believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has restored Paul Pogba and the rest of the Manchester United squad’s happiness.Under Jose Mourinho, things reached a boiling point by the time he was fired in December amid fractured relationships with the club’s players and staff following a turbulent start to the season. The Portuguese coach’s deteriorating relationship with Pogba had been widely reported on after the pair were caught on camera in a tense training ground exchange back in September following United’s shock Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Championship side Derby County.Mourinho even stripped Pogba of vice-captaincy and vowed that he would never captain the Red Devils again. But since Solskjaer replaced Mourinho in the Old Trafford dugout, Pogba has managed an impressive eight goals and five assists in 11 games under the Norwegian. And former United defender Rafael, who now plays for Lyon in France, believes Solskjaer deserves full credit for this turnaround.“I wasn’t surprised, not at all, because I know Ole very well,” Rafael told SportsMax.“He’s the one who bought my brother [Fabio] at Cardiff City, and I was training with him in the reserves [at United], I played some games with him.Harry Maguire, Manchester UnitedLiverpool legend Nicol slams Harry Maguire’s Man United form Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Steve Nicol believes Harry Maguire has made some “horrendous mistakes” recently, and has failed to find his best form since joining Manchester United.“He’s very strong mentally, he’s smiling, he’s making the players play for him. In today’s football, this is very, very important. Many players have the skills, but they need a coach who’s going to make them play for him.“This is what happened to Pogba. He wasn’t happy, he wasn’t smiling. A player like Pogba, if he doesn’t smile, if he doesn’t want to play, it’s hard. Now, they all want to play.“Mourinho, in truth, it seems like this is the opposite, the players were not happy, they were thinking about defending too much all the time.“Some players know how to defend, but when you talk too much, ‘you have to defend, defend’, they get tired. Maybe, I’m saying maybe, this is what happened, I don’t know.“The thing about players smiling, [Alex] Ferguson was like that as well. Of course, some games he was telling you, ‘be careful, you have to defend’, but he was never saying, ‘defend, don’t attack’.“He was never saying that. It’s important for the players, because if they think only about defending, you can’t even defend, because you’re thinking too much, and then it’s over.”Rafael played for United between 2008 to 2015 and managed 169 appearances in all competitions along with winning three Premier Leagues, one EFL Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.last_img read more

first_imgKolkata: State Education minister Partha Chatterjee on Thursday said a top official of the state Higher Education department will visit Hindu Hostel, take stock of the work and make a decision of its opening on Monday.”Special Secretary of state Higher Education department Siladitya Basu Roy will go for inspection of the hostel on Monday morning and take necessary steps to ensure that students can lodge at the earliest,” Chatterjee said. A section of students met Chatterjee at his chamber in the state assembly on Thursday afternoon and sought the government’s intervention. “I have spoken with the engineers of the state Public Works Department (PWD) as well as the minister-in-charge. I have felt that the renovation work has been delayed due to work done in phases by the university and the deadline of November 15 set by the state government for handing over the hostel could not be met,” he maintained. Chatterjee also expressed his doubts about the seriousness of the subject on the part of the university. “The authorities could have taken up this issue with a more humanitarian outlook and at the same time a section of students should have acted with patience,” he added. It may be mentioned that Hindu Hostel remained closed since July 2015 for renovation and the boarders were provided with lodging facilities at Tarulia in New Town. The university has failed to meet deadlines on more than one occasion in case of Hindu Hostel handover. The students had resorted to agitation for a long period demanding the same.last_img read more
