first_img He considers both Hansle Parchment and Omar McLeod, who finished second and sixth, respectively, in the World Championships, as potential Olympic champions. “If he (McLeod) performs to his real technical excellence, I don’t see why he shouldn’t be up there among the medals,” said Blake in reference to McLeod, who was far from his best in Beijing. Regarding Parchment, Blake said, “He keeps getting better every time he performs in the big events.” “He should also be there,” concluded the JAAA President, “as a medal contender for the gold.” He welcomed the Government-funded athlete support programme and reported that his association is currently looking for sponsors to contribute to a feeding programme. “Right now, we’re looking sponsorship to put in a feeding programme, so that the clubs can optimise the performance of their athletes,” said Blake. Jamaica’s best-ever medal tally at an Olympic Games came in 2012 in London when 12 medals (four gold, four silver, four bronze) were secured, all in athletics. Potential champs Athletics chief Warren Blake believes that Jamaica can top the track and field medal table at this summer’s Olympic Games. Blake, president of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA), says the 110-metre hurdles and the men’s 4×400-metre relays are the events that could make the difference. The JAAA president is quietly confident about the prospects for the nation’s athletes for 2016. Reflecting on the seven gold-medal haul achieved by Jamaica at last year’s World Championships in Beijing, Blake stated: “If we had gotten another gold, and there are places where we could have gotten another gold but it just didn’t work out, we would have topped the medal table.” In Beijing, Jamaica won gold medals courtesy of Usain Bolt in the men’s 100 and 200 metres, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in the ladies’ 100m, Danielle Williams in the 100m hurdles, both 4×100 metres relays and the ladies’ 4×400 metres. However, Kenya edged Jamaica to top the table by one gold medal. Blake is, however, foreseeing a change for the better. “Strategically, we think that come the Olympics this year, we are really in a good position to top the athletics medal table,” Blake said. “If you look at the areas in which we did well in 2015, we are set to still do well in those areas and we have a good crop of 400m runners coming up,” he added. “Our hurdlers,” Blake continued, “both on the male and female sides, are expected to do well again this year, and, with a bit of luck, we can do better in the male hurdles.”last_img read more

first_imgIt would absolutely and significantly enhance the simplicity of our existence if all men and all women were actually and literally created equal. The fact of the matter is that equality and parity, generally and specifically as it relates to income generation in all spheres of life including sports is a million miles from reality. Parity and equality in earnings are mythical even among men in sport, meaning that even in an all male team or all male sport some individuals earn more than others based on the value they bring to the team and or the sport. Lionel Messi for example earns three or four times what some of his star teammates earn at Barcelona. The same applies to NBA superstar LeBron James, whose salary and earnings are significantly more than any of his teammates at the Cleveland Cavaliers. The notion of equal pay and parity of earnings in sport is based more on emotionalism, more than a touch of feminism and a throwback to the old socialist ideals, than any semblance of appreciation for the modern reality. IRRATIONAL AND NAIVE In the current market driven global space it is irrational and naive to argue for example that the women cricketers should be remunerated at the same level as their male superstar counterparts. The disparity being too wide is a more reasonable cause worth exploring, but women’s cricket is still relatively new in terms of impact, popularity and income generation and is still a major work in progress. Let us not get too carried away by the impressive success of Stafanie Taylor and her team in lifting the ICC World T20 title. Being crowned champions will no doubt enhance the cause of the women’s game across the region and in the rapidly evolving world of cricket our top women players are already being offered contracts to play in the emerging leagues across the world. This represents steady and commensurate progress of the women’s game and stars of the women’s game. But to argue parity or equality is ridiculous. Remuneration must be value and productivity based. Failing that the economics of the situation will not hold. If tomorrow morning women’s cricket becomes more popular and generates more money than men’s cricket, by all means the women should then earn more than the men. In women’s tennis, for example, where there is equality as it relates to prize monies, it is fully deserved again based on value in that Serena Williams is no less of a money spinner and a tennis superstar than Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic and quite rightly the market has spoken in that regard. There is also the unique case of the USA women’s soccer team. They have chosen the courts as the avenue to settle their remuneration disparity dispute with the USA men’s soccer players. In that case the American women might very well have a credible case because the women’s game is hugely popular in the USA when compared to the men’s game, certainly in terms of participation there is parity between men and women in that country, while in terms of international success the American women have long and continue to outperform the American men. THEY ARE WORTH IT If a credible case can be built around the value of the USA women’s team bringing greater value to the market than the men, then by all means the American women should be commensurately remunerated. Fundamentally, that is because they are worth it and not simply because they are women. Equality between the sexes and even among the sexes is a mythical platitude. When the rubber hits the asphalt of real life nothing is further from the truth. Generally each individual is rewarded for the value he or she brings to the organisation or the team. If a female athlete brings more value to the cause than the male, she should be commensurately rewarded more than the male. If a male athlete brings more value to the cause than the female then he should earn more. It can get no more basic and equitable than that.last_img read more

first_imgGECOMOpen defiance of CCJ rulingIn clear defiance of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) recent orders for it to prepare for early elections, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is forging ahead with House-to-House Registration, which commences today. This was confirmed by GECOM’s Public Relations Officer, Yolanda Ward, in a statement on Friday. She pointed out that all eligible persons are mandated to register as it is a legal requirement.GECOM had warned Guyanese in an ad published in the local newspapers last month that persons who refuse to participate in the House-to-House Registration will be charged and fined $16,250 or face six months jail time, as outlined in the National Registration Act – Sections 6.5, 6.6 and 6.7.Nevertheless, Ward reminded in Friday’s missive that this is a new registration exercise and, therefore, all eligible persons should be registered, even if they had done so before.“Guyanese citizens by birth, descent, naturalisation or registration, 14 years and older by 31st October 2019 or a citizen of a Commonwealth country living in Guyana for a period of no less than one year preceding the qualifying date are all eligible for registration,” the statement detailed.GECOM went on to urge residents to have the relevant documents required for registration ready and be on the lookout for GECOM’s registration officials in their area. These documents include an original birth certificate, a valid passport, naturalisation certificate, certificate of registration, adoption certificate and deed poll or marriage certificate (if applicable). For the purpose of this exercise, each eligible person will only be registered where he/she resides. Residences include dwelling places such as homes, residential institutions such as hospices and homes for youth and the elderly.A new National Register of Registrants Database (NRRDB) will be created upon the conclusion of the registration process and then the Official List of Electors (OLE) will be extracted to conduct the upcoming General and Regional Elections.Previously, Ward had stated that this registration process will take some three months to complete. This means it will pass the constitutional deadline for early elections. It was reported that GECOM’s in-house attorney had advised Chief Elections Officer (CEO) Keith Lowenfield against proceeding with House-to-House Registration since it defies the CCJ orders. In its consequential orders handed down last week, the CCJ said that GECOM is obliged to “abide by the provisions of the Constitution”, which states that the Cabinet, including the President, must resign and call elections within three months upon the passage of a No-Confidence Motion.According to CCJ President Justice Adrian Saunders those three months took effect from its June 18 ruling, validating the December passage of the motion against the coalition. This means elections should be held on or before September 18, 2019.However, the PNC-led caretaker Government has been pushing for House-to-House Registration for a “clean” voters’ list to be used in the upcoming polls, saying this is the only way credible elections can be held. The coalition claims that the current list is “padded” with persons who are not supposed to be there and that without fresh elections, young people who were never registered would be disenfranchised. Government believes too that with a new list, it will have a better outcome at the polls. But a United Nations (UN) Needs Assessment Mission found last year that there was no need for a new voter’s list. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) had deployed a team back in May 2018 to assess Guyana’s electoral needs following a request from GECOM for technical assistance.“It is the view of the Mission that there is no certainty that a new voters’ list will have more credibility than the current list and that stakeholders will trust it more. Furthermore, any list created close to the elections will likely be criticised as political motivated,” a report from the visiting team stated.Meanwhile, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Opposition has insisted that the concerns by the coalition can be addressed through an extended claims and objections period, as had previously confirmed by the Chief Elections Officer.Back in February, Lowenfield had said “We can move toward the conduct… of a claims and objections exercise of a duration to be specified by the Commission so that we can arrive at a list… claims allow for the youthful to be added and objections for the deceased to be removed based on the submission made by the GRO (Guyana Register Office). Other deaths not reported to GRO, when we are in the field, people will come to us and say Jagmohan next door died and we want his name to be removed”.Moreover, the Opposition further said that new House-to-House registration would disenfranchise Guyanese students studying abroad, Guyanese working overseas and other Guyanese who may be holidaying during the period when the exercise is being done.In fact, an overseas-based Guyanese, Bibi Zeenatoun, had filed legal proceedings in the High Court to restraining the elections commission from proceeding with House-to-House registration. The legal documents state that fresh registration will exclude qualified registrants currently on the National Register and the Official List of Electors, such as Zeenatoun, thus breaching her constitutional right to vote here.Nevertheless, as the elections body forges ahead with the conduct of House-to-House Registration, GECOM says operational activities for the preparations of General and Regional Elections will be simultaneously undertaken.Keith Lowenfieldlast_img read more

first_imgUpdate – 17:00: The bins referenced in this report have now been cleared.Beachgoers at a popular Donegal beach have called for a major clean up of overflowing dog waste bins.Visitors to the beautiful Culdaff Beach over the Easter break were met with revolting sights at the entrance and children’s play areas. The dog waste bins were so jammed with foul-filled bags that pet owners had started to pile their waste outside and around them.Children’s Play Area at Culdaff BeachCuldaff Beach Car Park BinA local man who visited the Inishowen beach with his children yesterday said the issue is a ‘disgrace’.“I thought the first bin at the car park was disgusting, but then I walked over the beach to the kids park and it was just as bad,” he said.“This didn’t just happen over the weekend, it’s weeks of dog mess in those bins.” Children’s Play Area at Culdaff BeachThe Culdaff man said that he has contacted a number of local councillors to have the mess cleared. He added that more needs to be done to manage the waste issue: “I always take my wains for a walk on the beach. We have a wee dog ourselves and the first thing we do is pick up the bag and put it in the bin. Obviously people are good enough to use the bins, but there isn’t much point if they are in this state.”Disgust over foul mess at Donegal beach was last modified: April 30th, 2019 by Rachel McLaughlinShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:culdaff beachlast_img read more

first_imgThe Cassini spacecraft made its closest-yet flyby of Enceladus July 14, skimming just 109 miles above the surface.  This was the closest approach to any object thus far in the four-year mission.  It was nearly three times closer than the earlier record, the March 9 Enceladus flyby (see encounter map).    Enceladus has long been one of the most intriguing moons in the solar system because of its extremely bright surface, and its large uncratered regions riddled with cracks and ridges (see photo gallery).  The BBC News summarized some of the puzzles regarding this Saturnian satellite.  Is it a source of E-ring particles?  Does it have ice volcanos and geysers?  Is there an ocean below the surface?  The biggest mystery is the source of energy to drive resurfacing processes.  Enceladus has a very nearly circular orbit and is not in any known tidal interactions with other moons, or with Saturn.  No ammonia has yet been detected in the spectrum (ammonia might allow a lower melting point for the water ice that makes up the bulk of the moon).  How, then, could melting occur, especially in recent times?    A beautiful picture of the little moon Prometheus shepherding the F-ring was released by the Cassini team this week: click here, and also the first tantalizing look at a moon that looks like a sponge: Hyperion.Update 07/15/2005: The raw images were posted at the Cassini website late Friday.  New and improved images of Rhea taken from 182,000 kilometers were posted first.  Later, the Enceladus data stream came in.  Wide-angle views revealed a bizarre set of tiger-like stripes near the south pole (a region never before imaged), and a huge canyon on the eastern limb (example).  Distinct boundaries between cratered and resurfaced regions were clearly visible.  Closer in (example), the stripes began to look like four nearly parallel canyons emanating from a rough highland across a smooth plain.  From 9,000 miles (example), they are seen to intersect earlier canyons in complex ways.  The two highest-resolution images near closest approach (narrow and wide angle), slightly smeared due to the speed of the spacecraft (over 18,000 mph) at such close range, reveal a somewhat fluffy-looking region of hills and valleys.  No clear signs of volcanos or geysers are apparent, either at highest resolution or looking back along the limb during the outbound leg (example).  To first order, the topographic features appear tectonic rather than fluvial.  Data from other instruments, such as the visual and infrared mapping spectrometer (VIMS), will assist scientists in interpreting the images.  Here is the BBC News post-encounter report, and check out the photo gallery on the Imaging Team website.  The Planetary Society also did a full page spread on the flyby sequence and posted sample images.    The Cassini team has pulled off another resounding success in a string of spectacular encounters during the spacecraft’s first year in orbit (see 07/01/2004 story).  The rapid-fire sequence of images of Enceladus today, along with those from March and February this year, have brought sudden fulfillment to years of yearning since Cassini was first designed in the early 1980s, with dreams of Enceladus at close range part of the plans.  Interpreting the new images is sure to keep planetary geologists busy for years.Note: dark lines cutting across the right side of some raw images are due to the lossless compression algorithm used.  The software estimates the compression ratio in advance because of the constraints of time during the encounter.  Interpolation can reconstruct the missing pixels.Update 07/20/2005: New Scientist quoted some scientists puzzling over the bouldery surface seen at highest resolution: “That’s a surface texture I have never seen anywhere else in the solar system,” said one; said another, “This is just strange.  In fact, I have a really hard time understanding what I’m seeing.”  The boulders seem to avoid rather than filling in the cracks, and there are no small craters.  Neither is there hoped-for evidence of liquid flow on the surface, and Enceladus, being six times smaller than Europa, seems too small to maintain a subsurface ocean.  “Trying to figure out what is going on is going to take a lot longer than a weekend of swapped emails,” said one member of the imaging team.Update 07/26/2005: a JPL press release says that the south pole looks younger than the rest of the moon.  The region has no impact craters and has been carved into hills of house-sized boulders by unique tectonic features.  This was unexpected; the south polar region appears to be distinct from other parts of the moon, and is being called one of the youngest surfaces in the solar system.  “Young terrain requires a means to generate the heat needed to modify the surface,” the report says.  More interesting facts about Enceladus may come to light when data from the other instruments are combined with the visible-light images.  JPL also provided a dramatic zoom-in movie (also on the imaging team site) showing where the highest resolution image was taken in context to the moon as a whole.Update 07/29/2005: Another press release from Jet Propulsion Laboratory has announced the discovery of “ice volcanism” near the south pole.  The heavily cratered north pole is very different from the south, where the temperature is significantly warmer, and there are no impact craters.  Scientists believe water ice is erupting from cracks that crisscross the south pole like tiger stripes.  If so, Enceladus becomes the smallest moon to exhibit cryovolcanism.  The previously-reported atmosphere turns out to be localized around the south pole, where it leaks away and is continuously replenished.  This eruptive activity, however, is not the source of the E-ring particles.  Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer has confirmed, as suspected, that micrometeor impacts against the moon eject particles that become distributed into the broad, diffuse E-ring.  To find such activity at one of the poles was a big surprise; one scientist said, “This is as astonishing as if we’d flown past Earth and found that Antarctica was warmer than the Sahara.”Scientists find the temperatures difficult to explain if sunlight is the only heat source.  More likely, a portion of the polar region, including the “tiger stripe” fractures, is warmed by heat escaping from the interior.  Evaporation of this warm ice at several locations within the region could explain the density of the water vapor cloud detected by other instruments.  How a 500-kilometer (310-mile) diameter moon can generate this much internal heat and why it is concentrated at the south pole is still a mystery.    Another Cassini Press Release from July 29 provides more of the pieces to the cryovolcanism puzzle.  The atmosphere earlier detected by the magnetometer turns out to be lopsided; eruptions of material are not coming from the northern hemisphere, but only from the south polar region.  The UV spectrometer also detected this asymmetry during an occultation.  One of the infrared instruments showed the south to be warmer than the north, and the visible-light cameras observed many tectonic features near the south pole.  The cooperative activity of multiple instruments onboard Cassini each contributed to the interpretation that cryovolcanism is occurring.  Why, and how, this should happen on a tiny moon subjected to insufficient tidal stresses, and with insufficient radioactive heating in its interior, is unexplained.    Since this moon is turning out to be one of the big attractions of the mission, Enceladus will probably be a front-runner for additional close flybys during any approved extended mission.  The next extremely close flyby is scheduled for March 12, 2008 at only 97 km (58 miles).  Several others before then are in the 80,000 km range.Enceladus illustrates several processes going on at Saturn that appear unlikely to be sustainable for billions of years (see 03/10/2005 and 03/04/2005 entries).  The BBC news article, for instance, mentioned that E-ring particles can only survive for hundreds of years, not billions.  This means that to maintain belief that the ring is ancient, planetary scientists must find that Enceladus has been continually replenishing the particles for over four billion years.  Recall, however, that a huge explosion and loss of mass from the E-ring was observed in early 2004 (see 07/02/2004 entry).  It is unlikely that event was atypical.  Such destructive processes do not add to the ring; they erode it even faster.    Regardless of one’s interpretation of the images, one thing all can agree on: the Cassini team deserves congratulations from around the world.  To be able to glimpse this kind of detail on bodies that are mere specks from Earth telescopes, to be able to navigate a ship 880 million miles away with such precision, and to be able to send streams of ones and zeroes through empty space and reconstruct them into photographs on Earth, is truly astonishing.  With the extraordinary becoming so commonplace in our technological civilization, we tend to forget that we are living in a historic period of discovery.  Early astronomers could never have imagined what we saw today.  Had they been told it would one day become possible, how they would have longed for a chance to share this experience.  Catch the drama of what is happening.(Visited 8 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Some are novels of glowing hyperbole while others lament the irritable waitress and denounce the spot as the diner on the seventh level of hell. Either way, you often find yourself overwhelmed and more confused than when you started out. Loopt, the mobile location tracking app and social network, announced today a new feature called Loopt Qs, “a fun, really social way to get bite-sized insider info and share your own opinions about a local place.” Loopt announced the new feature today on stage at the location-centric Where 2.0 conference. Loopt Qs offers real-time answers to common questions about locations around you – venues, restaurants, bars, and other locations. Is there a long line? What’s the best happy hour special here? Is the WiFi fast enough to work?“Most of the time, reviews are about a place you’re really excited about or someplace that really frustrated you,” explains the company in a demo video. “The reality is, most places are worth going to. […] By asking super specific questions that are quick and easy to answer, we capture a lot of the information that gets lost in the shuffle and the fact that it’s constantly being updated in real-time makes it sort of a radar for your city.”We’ve seen this similar functionality in another app called Localmind, which debuted at this year’s SXSW conference. With Localmind, users who check in to locations using an LBS service like Foursquare sign up to receive questions about those places. Other Localmind users can then see that there is someone checked-in and ask them a question. It’s a one-on-one interaction.Loopt Qs differs primarily in that it takes a collection of answers from many users and presents them in a graph, giving a simple, quick aggregate of answers. Are portions at this restaurant tiny, just right, or really large? Why take just one answer (potentially from a very large, hungry individual) when you can look at a bar graph of answers and see the most popular answer? This is Loopt’s approach with Qs.Loopt Qs will go live “very soon,” with San Franciscans getting first crack and other cities following. Maintaining a low score implies that you are on an uphill battle to a bright financial future. This score is defined as a numerical expression of your credit background. It ranges between 300 and 850. Your month-to-month service providers like cell phone companies and insurance companies will levy high fees if your score is low. Utility providers regularly monitor residents’ credit scores before giving services like gas, electricity, and water to an apartment or home. If your credit score is low, you may have to part with a substantial payment ahead of time for these utilities. Landlords are more likely to take on tenants with a high credit score because of their commitment to their financial responsibilities and make quick payments. A rate of 640 and below might not qualify you with many lenders. If they accept you, you will pay massive rates. Taking the vital measures to elevate your score should save you lots of money. If you already own a home that you’re paying for monthly, refinancing presents you with the chance to pay lower interest rates. A low credit score removes any possibility of you refinancing your home. This suggests that during the lifetime of your mortgage, you would pay tons of money over and above what you would pay if you were able to refinance. This would have severe repercussions on your financial future. It Affects Your Refinancing Ability. Insurance companies are inclined to confirm your credit soundness and this will have an effect on the premiums you will pay. They don’t necessarily need your score, but it contributes to your report which determines their final decision.Certain states forbid the use of credit scores for the car or home insurance. Some insurers do still pick out relevant information from your credit history. They need to analyze your possibility to make claims and pay premiums. Low scores will multiply the amount you would pay with a high credit score. It Will Affect Your Mortgage Rates. It Affects Your Ability to Rent a Home at a Good Price. It Will Affect Your Retirement. It Will Affect Your Monthly Bills. It Affects Your Employment Eligibility. Calvin Ford Related Posts A low credit score could mean that your debts are a lot more than your income, making it a nightmare to pay your outstanding payments promptly. It could also indicate that you are spending more than you make and finding it difficult to meet your financial responsibilities. This puts you into more debt which becomes a never-ending cycle and you are finding it hard to catch up. What worsens this scenario is the high rates on your realistic loans in addition to that. This affects your capacity to save any money for a future nest egg. And without adequate savings, you’re looking at a wrecked financial future. Have you thought that getting a business loan has no connection to your personal credit? You’re mistaken! Financiers need your score to weigh your financial soundness and give them an indication of whether you’ll be in a position to make payments promptly.
