first_img He considers both Hansle Parchment and Omar McLeod, who finished second and sixth, respectively, in the World Championships, as potential Olympic champions. “If he (McLeod) performs to his real technical excellence, I don’t see why he shouldn’t be up there among the medals,” said Blake in reference to McLeod, who was far from his best in Beijing. Regarding Parchment, Blake said, “He keeps getting better every time he performs in the big events.” “He should also be there,” concluded the JAAA President, “as a medal contender for the gold.” He welcomed the Government-funded athlete support programme and reported that his association is currently looking for sponsors to contribute to a feeding programme. “Right now, we’re looking sponsorship to put in a feeding programme, so that the clubs can optimise the performance of their athletes,” said Blake. Jamaica’s best-ever medal tally at an Olympic Games came in 2012 in London when 12 medals (four gold, four silver, four bronze) were secured, all in athletics. Potential champs Athletics chief Warren Blake believes that Jamaica can top the track and field medal table at this summer’s Olympic Games. Blake, president of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA), says the 110-metre hurdles and the men’s 4×400-metre relays are the events that could make the difference. The JAAA president is quietly confident about the prospects for the nation’s athletes for 2016. Reflecting on the seven gold-medal haul achieved by Jamaica at last year’s World Championships in Beijing, Blake stated: “If we had gotten another gold, and there are places where we could have gotten another gold but it just didn’t work out, we would have topped the medal table.” In Beijing, Jamaica won gold medals courtesy of Usain Bolt in the men’s 100 and 200 metres, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in the ladies’ 100m, Danielle Williams in the 100m hurdles, both 4×100 metres relays and the ladies’ 4×400 metres. However, Kenya edged Jamaica to top the table by one gold medal. Blake is, however, foreseeing a change for the better. “Strategically, we think that come the Olympics this year, we are really in a good position to top the athletics medal table,” Blake said. “If you look at the areas in which we did well in 2015, we are set to still do well in those areas and we have a good crop of 400m runners coming up,” he added. “Our hurdlers,” Blake continued, “both on the male and female sides, are expected to do well again this year, and, with a bit of luck, we can do better in the male hurdles.”last_img read more

first_img17 July 2013Government, business, labour and civil society collaboration to improve the quality of education in South Africa entered a new phase on Tuesday with the launch of the National Education Collaboration Framework Trust (NECT).The trust is a civil society partnership aimed at strengthening cooperation among business, labour and civil society formations to improve education outcomes in the country.Speaking at the launch of the trust in Pretoria on Tuesday, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe said the initiative would multiply opportunities for collaborations that enabled government and education stakeholders to bring about improvements in a co-ordinated fashion.“Like you, we believe that both the government and the non-governmental groupings have a common goal of improving the quality of education, but do not as yet share a common understanding of the roles that they expect of each other or have to play towards achieving this common goal.”Motlanthe noted that interventions by the private sector had demonstrated that even learners that attended poorly resourced schools could achieve excellent results if provided with the required support.According to the Department of Basic Education, the trust will not replace current civil society and business projects in education. Rather, it will galvanise the many civil society and government commitments that already exist, applying lessons from the past and seizing existing opportunities to improve education. The trust’s objectives will include improving the quality of schooling, overseeing the implementation of national education collaboration programmes, and ensuring that such programmes are suited to their context. Also speaking at Tuesday’s launch, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga commended the trust’s members for working tirelessly for the formation of the initiative, which has the thumbs-up from all stakeholders. The NECT’s founding trustee include FirstRand CEO Sizwe Nxasana; Business Leadership SA’s Mark Lamberti; Deloitte executive chair Futhi Mtoba; Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga; Basic Education Director-General Bobby Soobrayan; National Professional Teachers’ Association of SA president Basil Manuel; SA Democratic Teachers Union deputy secretary-general Nkosana Dolopi; and Brian Figaji, former vice-chancellor of Peninsula Technikon. The NECT’s patrons include businessman Cyril Ramaphosa, former Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Business Leadership SA president Bobby Godsell, and James Motlatsi, former president of the National Union of Mineworkers.Source: SAnews.gov.zalast_img read more

The stand somehow collapsed and Yost fell about 20 feet to the ground, and the landing was so hard that he sustained a “massive fracture” to his pelvis and four broken ribs.He also lost so much blood that surgeons later told him he nearly died.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSWATCH: Drones light up sky in final leg of SEA Games torch runSPORTSSEA Games: Philippines picks up 1st win in men’s water poloSPORTSMalditas save PH from shutout“I didn’t understand the gravity of the situation until I was through it,” said the 62-year-old Yost, an avid outdoorsman. “I’m just glad I had my phone, I’ll tell you that.”Yost said he can’t put weight on either leg for at least two months, which means he’s confined to his lounge chair or a wheelchair. There are two rods, some plates and screws holding his pelvis together, and a good number of staples that are helping to keep the incision closed. Typhoon Kammuri accelerates, gains strength en route to PH He drove to a second tree stand and climbed up wearing his safety belt. The stand felt solid at first, but as he reached around the tree to clip in, “it was like a hang-man’s gallows.”“Down I went,” Yost said. “I hit on my right side.”Yost was fortunate that he had his cellphone nearby, and was able to call Deb for help. He’s been in the tree stands before and reached for his phone to find he’d forgotten it, and admits thinking to himself those times, “That is so stupid! What if something happened?”Yost’s wife was able to contact 911, then guide responders to where her husband had fallen. Its remote nature and the severity of Yost’s injury meant a helicopter was needed to get him to the hospital.Once there, doctors resorted to emergency surgery to stop the bleeding, and required eight units of blood to replace what Yost had lost. They also put him in what he described as “really tight compression pants,” and at one point he told the emergency room doctor that “you guys are killing me.”“The guy said, ‘Look, Ned, this is going to save your life,’” Yost said.Yost underwent another surgery the next day to repair the pelvis, and doctors then told him that the fracture was so severe and blood loss so great that 25 percent to 30 percent of similar cases result in death.“I thought I was going to be fine. Ok, my pelvis is broken. I’m a pretty tough guy. I can handle the pain,” Yost said. “I mean, it was a little scary getting on that helicopter because I was in so much pain, getting really, really woozy. But I still felt like I was in great hands.“I’m glad to be alive and I’m glad to be hurting for a little bit.”Yost, the winningest manager in Royals history, is scheduled to have the staples removed next week and follow-up X-rays on his pelvis. The doctors said he’ll be off his feet for two or three months — “For me, it’s probably going to be two,” he said — and then have to undergo physical therapy. I don’t think I’ve left this lounge chair since I’ve been home for more than 5 minutes in two days. Just find a way I can be comfortable and relax, and then try not to move for 10 hours. (AP Photo/Orlin Wagner, File)KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Ned Yost spent Monday afternoon in a lounge chair at his farm just outside Atlanta, the pain from a shattered pelvis so unbearable that the only movement the Royals manager could make was to reposition. He was happy for the pain, though. It reminded him he was alive.ADVERTISEMENT But he vowed that by spring training, “I should be pretty much full-go.”Anybody who knows Yost wouldn’t think otherwise. The curmudgeonly manager prides himself on his toughness, a trait he’s instilled in the Royals over the years. It served them well in turning around their fortunes, too, from a sad-sack squad that regularly lost 100 games to a team that went to back-to-back World Series and won the championship in 2015.Still, the injury that Yost sustained tested even his toughness.Yost said his wife, Deb, had left just after noon on Nov. 4 to attend a nephew’s wedding in Alabama, so he hopped in a four-wheeler and headed out on his property. His intention was to check his tree stands and prepare them for winter, and he took care of the first stand without any problems.ADVERTISEMENT CPP denies ‘Ka Diego’ arrest caused ‘mass panic’ among S. first_imgWolves boss Nuno delighted after defeat of Bournemouthby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveRaul Jimenez was again on the scoresheet as Wolves defeated Bournemouth on Saturday. An early goal from Raul Jimenez and a late strike by substitute Ivan Cavaleiro handed Wolves the three points.Following wins against Chelsea and Newcastle in the past 10 days, it is the first time since March 1980 that Wanderers have recorded a trio of consecutive victories in the top division.Wolves boss Nuno stated afterwards, “The boys playing in this weather, in the rain, and how hard it was, I’m very proud of them today. They did a fantastic job because we have to adapt to the realities. We were versatile enough to realise that today was about defending and counter attacks – exploiting our talent to achieve what we achieved today, a deserved win.“The organisation, the shape and how compact we were. We didn’t allow too many situations to Bournemouth, who are a fantastic team and played very well. Always trying to help our team mates is what defending is all about. There were not many chances, it was very hard for both teams. They matched us in shape, it was a tough game. We are happy but credit to Bournemouth, it was very difficult.”On third win in a row, he added: “We achieved a third win, but it’s not over, we have to go again. Before we were in a bad moment, now we’re in a good moment and why is important to recognise. Their character, the way they commit themselves to the work on a daily basis and to the competition so well done.“I’m very proud of the work we do every day. The character took us out of the bad moment. The only secret is work, we have to work hard. We do the same things, we were committed and football is like this.
