first_imgAER Arann may pull its Derry to Dublin air route after the Government today confirmed it will not subsidise the route from June.Donegal North East Sinn Féin Deputy, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn has angrily responded to news that the FG/ Labour Government will not return the Public Service Obligation (PSO) subsidy for the Derry to Dublin air-link.In response to Deputy Mac Lochlainn’s parliamentary question, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport,Leo Varadkar, confirmed that he and his Government will not reverse the decision of the previous Government to cut the route. Deputy Mac Lochlainn said: “The decision of the previous Government to remove the PSO subsidy for the Derry to Dublin air-link was shocking. This subsidy is very important to make the route sustainable. Their defence of the cut that rail and road infrastructure connecting the two cities and regions is at the required standard was beyond belief.“There is no rail link connecting Dublin to Derry and North Donegal and the A5 dual carriageway will not be constructed till 2015. To compare Derry to Galway in terms of links to Dublin is mind boggling. There is both a railway and motorway connecting these two cities”.“I had hoped for a new approach from this Government to the needs of North Donegal and the North West. The response from Minister Varadkar appears to herald more of the same. I will continue to challenge this unjust and illogical decision. I invite local FG and Labour TDs and councillors to join me in that effort.”ends WILL AER ARANN PULL DERRY-DUBLIN AIR ROUTE AFTER GOVERNMENT CUTS FUNDING? was last modified: April 7th, 2011 by gregShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Aer Aranndonegallast_img read more

first_imgTottenham legend Ledley King is confident the current Spurs crop has the talent, strength and mentality to challenge for the Premier League title ‘for years to come’.Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been second in the table since the start of February, and are now seven points behind top flight leaders Leicester City. The Foxes, who have dragged results over the line in recent weeks, with their last five victories all 1-0, are now runaway favourites for the crown, yet there is still time for Tottenham – who have many of the league’s most in-form players, including red-hot striker Harry Kane, in their ranks – to overthrow the table-toppers.Fan favourite King is less optimistic of their chances with only six games left to play, and believes Leicester deserve their glory if they do indeed lift the coveted trophy. However, the former centre-back insists the mental toughness Spurs have shown throughout this season, and most recently in their 1-1 with Liverpool at Anfield, will certainly see them challenge again in the next few campaigns.Speaking on the Colin Murray show, King said: “It doesn’t look like Leicester are going to slip up, they seem to be handling the pressure very well and credit to them.“But I’m really pleased with the Tottenham team at the moment, I’m really pleased with what they’re doing and how the future’s looking.“It’s been such a team effort. In seasons past we’ve always had these individual stars, but the team as a whole has been the big factor this season.“Obviously Dele [Alli] has been great and Harry has again scored over 20 goals, but for me Toby Alderweireld, in his first season at the club, and Eric Dier, in his first season as a midfielder, have been the stand-out players for this season.“What’s impressed me most is that at no stage of the season has the team lost back-to-back games, even with the pressure on them. They’ve shown great mental strength.“I’m seeing all the right signs that this is a team, not just for this season but for the future, that has the right mentality and can hopefully win the Premier League for the next few years to come.”Listen to the interview with Tottenham legend Ledley King IN FULL above!last_img read more

first_imgAjay Gupta, the eldest of the embattled Gupta brothers accused of “state capture” in South Africa, was reportedly spotted in Dubai on April 4 by a South African businessman. The businessman Justin van Pletzen was greeted by a relaxed Gupta outside what is thought to be the Indian consulate, Huffington Post Africa reported. Gupta told Pletzen that he would return to South Africa after he receives a response from the authorities, the report quoted the businessman as saying. The encounter was filmed by Pletzen, who posted it on his Facebook page, saying, “Just bumped into AJ Gupta in Dubai … and if it wasn’t for the law here I would have dropped him.”In the video, Pletzen is heard telling Gupta that South Africa is looking for him. “The day they give a reply, I’ll go there,” Gupta replies.“Please share this widely so that we can get him back to SA so he can face the music,” Van Pletzen further wrote.Meanwhile, South African elite police unit, Hawks, have reiterated their call to Ajay Gupta to hand himself over and says they have issued a warrant for the same, eNCA.com reported. As per the Hawks, Ajay Gupta is a fugitive from justice after he failed to turn himself in to the authorities in February.Hangwani Mulaudzi, the spokesperson of the Hawks unit, told eNCA.com that they are aware of his whereabouts and that there are many outstanding matters related to their investigation of the Gupta brothers. He added that Gupta is wanted for charges that aren’t related to the Estina Dairy farm case. “He is more than aware that we are looking for him. Our advice to his lawyers was that he should hand himself over. He didn’t do that. That status quo stands. We’re not worried,” the website quoted him as saying.Meanwhile, the Gupta brothers missed another deadline to appear before the tax authorities in India on March 26. They were summoned to explain how they amassed several properties in the country. The authorities also suspect that they brought “illicit” money into India. Last month, the brothers sent their accountant to face the tax authorities and they were granted a 10-day extension. On March 6, tax authorities raided Guptas’ properties in Dehradun, Saharanpur and the National Capital Region, and 125 Gupta-linked properties were identified during the raids, the Jagran reported. The Gupta family’s luxury jet, a Bombardier Global 6000, whose whereabouts are currently unknown, was grounded by a Johannesburg court on March 19. The family was given 15 days to hand over the jet. The court also “interdicted and restrained” the family from using and possessing the aircraft. The Gupta family has been accused of corruption and influenced peddling due to their closeness to former South African president Jacob Zuma, who resigned following a raid at the Guptas’ home by the Hawks on Feb. 14, and pressure from the ruling party, the African National Congress.
